History of the Passinhon Migrants and Families Association (PMAFA)

The Passinhon Migrants and Families Association (PMAFA) was established as a community-based organization dedicated to supporting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families in Passi City, Iloilo. Its formation was inspired by the growing number of Passinhon migrant workers across the globe and the need to provide them with social, emotional, and economic support while strengthening their connection to their hometown. The association was organized with the assistance of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 6, in coordination with the City Government of Passi City through its Public Employment Service Office (PESO). PMAFA began as a unifying body that brought together OFWs’ families from the 51 barangays of Passi City. Its main objective is to empower migrants and their families through livelihood, skills development, and reintegration programs that promote financial stability and community involvement. Since its inception, PMAFA has actively participated in various capacity-building and livelihood programs. In March 2022, the association, together with its barangay officers, discussed and adopted the General Program of Action for 2022–2024, outlining strategic initiatives to support OFWs and their dependents. This effort was further strengthened through collaborations with TESDA, ATIKHA Western Visayas, and other partner institutions that facilitated training programs such as Food Processing and Digital Financial Literacy. A major milestone was achieved in September 2024, when PMAFA was recognized as an OWWA Gintumod nga Benepisyaryo, receiving ₱1 million in funding under the Tulong PUSO (Tulong sa Pag-unlad ng Samahang OFWs) program. This support enabled the association to enhance its livelihood projects and provide sustainable economic opportunities for its members, especially returning OFWs affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, PMAFA stands as a model of solidarity, resilience, and empowerment among migrant families in Passi City. Guided by its mission to promote the welfare of OFWs and their loved ones, the association continues to serve as a bridge between the government, partner organizations, and the migrant community—proving that collective effort and compassion can build stronger and more self-reliant communities.
